On Wednesday, February 23, 2005, Dr. Leonardo Palombi spoke to the AIDS Awareness Committee of Boston College about the Community of Sant'Egidio's DREAM project. Dr. Palombi, a member of the Community in Rome, has volunteered a great deal of his time to set up the DREAM project in Mozambique. The project provides holistic treatment, including anti-retroviral therapy, to HIV-positive mothers and their children.
Dr. Palombi stressed the seriousness of the AIDS epidemic in Africa, but also sounded very hopeful about the continent's future. Critics had derided the project as too large an undertaking, preferring instead to focus only on prevention. However, the project has been very successful and is now being implemented in a number of other countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Palombi also presented the project to the 12th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Boston.
