Social Solidarity in a Time of Physical Distancing

While many speak of “social distancing” in the time of COVID-19, there is an enormous cost for those who are already alone in our society. Loneliness kills and social distancing, for some, can spell the end of the only human contact they have. At Sant’Egidio, we prefer “physical distancing,” maintaining health precautions but using this time to emphasize and recommit to our friendship and solidarity with the lonely and vulnerable.

In New York, in Oxford, and around the world Sant’Egidio remains close to those who are today are more isolated than usual. Some of our children have done their part to remind our friends that they are not alone!
