After nearly 30 years in New York and in response to the dramatic effects of the pandemic, the Community of Sant’Egidio dreams of a House of Solidarity – an innovative way to respond, together, to the challenges of our time.

A place to address the urgent needs of those living on the streets, such as hygienic care (showers and laundry), documentation, job help, and more.

A place where the care and needs of children are taken seriously, where they can grow and play at a School of Peace and not of violence.

A place for dialogues, initiatives, and meetings that would foster a culture of peace in the city and in the world.

A place where immigrants and non-English speakers can learn and participate in genuine and collaborative cultural workshops.

A place that is respectful of the environment; attentive to ecological protection, with minimal consumption.

A space where a culture of solidarity and peace may grow, where the most vulnerable are welcomed as brothers and sisters

Updates

In September of 2024 we began our first service at the House of Solidarity – English Classes for recent migrants.

We have faithfully accompanied a group of non-English Speaker along their first class in the English language. We look forward to continuing and growing this service and others in our House of Solidarity.

On October 23, 2023 the House of Solidarity was opened in Harlem, in New York with the presence of Marco Impagliazzo.

Located in a meaningful area of the city, the House will be a place of welcome, open to the neighborhood and to the city, a house for those who are most vulnerable, for those who are seeking peace and for those who have arrived from afar looking for a new life.

The property for the future House of Solidarity has been identified and the transfer of the deed is advancing.

The house has passed all inspections and is currently under contract. Pending final approval, we look forward to launching services in Harlem for all of New York City in 2024.

While awaiting the House of Solidarity, we brought Showers of Blessing outside the Church of Our Saviour every Sunday, the same place where we distribute food every Tuesday evening, in partnership with Catholic Charities NY and Power in a Shower.

We are currently working to expand shower services with another sponsor for the coming year!

We have continued our weekly services to the elderly, children at the School of Peace, and Homeless outreach.

We served for than 15,00 meals, met more than 750 individuals with our friends on the street. We have maintained our School of Peace and prepare ourselves for summer. Weekly visits to elderly continue. This year we had our Summer Vacation with friends from the street and children from the School of Peace for the first time since COVID-19 hit. We have celebrated many holidays together including Easter, our Summer Picnic, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
