On September 17th, dozens of youth from all around the United States gathered for the first American National Youth for Peace Meeting in Washington DC. Following the Georgetown Day for Peace – two days of interfaith dialogue held by Georgetown University with the help of the Community of Sant’Egidio – the Youth gathered to discuss what their dreams of a peaceful world were.
In these two days together, the love and joy of a life lived in friendship and service was experienced by all. Taking seriously the call of Pope Francis to not be “young couch potatoes,” but rather to “embark courageously upon the exciting quest for happiness,” the Youth shared a day both of reflection and action; taking part in both the service with the homeless, Street Greetings – that the Community does every Friday night – and a visit with the elderly at the nursing home the community has been visiting for many years.
