On March 18, 2023 we gathered for the second time as a community in New York City to remember all those who lost their lives while living on the street.
This is a tradition that Sant’Egidio in Rome started in 1983 after the death of a dear friend, Modesta who died because she was denied service by an ambulance. In her memory, we remember all those who die abandoned by our cities, so that no one’s life be forgotten.
We gathered as a community of friends and family – from the youngest to the oldest, kids of the School of Peace, and our friends from the street – at Our Saviour Parish, where we have our weekly food distribution.
Gathering to remember those who have died reminds us of our common humanity and fragility, and gives dignity to the life of every human being, loved and remembered by name.
