Following the Community of Sant’Egdio’s growth in Mozambique through and following the country’s civil war the DREAM program was launched, in response to the burgeoning HIV/AIDS epidemic. The program, which initially stood for Drug Resource Enhancement against AIDS and Malnutrition, was developed to fight AIDS and malnutrition.

Over the last nearly three decades, the DREAM program has demonstrated dramatic efficacy, focusing on reaching isolated rural areas through clinics, local training, and home care. This approach, which is always offered free of charge, makes it possible to achieve high retention rates and a great participation in health education.

This precious health education work, carried out together with the patients, has generated a new culture: AIDS is no longer a death sentence. Thanks to its effectiveness and the results it has achieved, DREAM has taken on a broader meaning and now stands for Disease Relief through Excellent and Advanced Means. Its scope is now comprehensive health care for all of Africa.

As the world grapples with the future of global public health, the Community of Sant’Egidio welcomes all to “Daring to DREAM,” a panel reflecting on the successes of the DREAM program and considering what the future might hold.
