While the United States tightens its immigration policies and deports foreign residents simply because they come from certain countries—mostly in Africa or in situations of war and violence—the Community of Sant’Egidio in New York prayed for the migrants who died on their journeys of hope.
“Dying of Hope” is the name of the prayer that, all over the world, various Communities of Sant’Egidio dedicate to the memory of each of the victims of these dramatic migrations.
On journeys to the U.S. there have been countless deaths due to the terrible conditions of travel by sea or in trucks; or at the border during clashes with police and in detention centers.
Many friends came together to affirm their desire to persevere in welcoming migrants, to facilitate new pathways for entry, and to foster a broad and supportive sense of brotherhood and sisterhood. The children from the School of Peace, who had just completed a project on “Lessons from Immigrants” also participated in this important moment for our community.
