His first word was peace, and he will be an influential voice for believers and the whole world.
The Community of Sant’Egidio rejoices with the entire Church over the election of our new Pope Leo XIV.
His papacy starts at a time marked by violence and uncertainties, but he opens his regards with the simple words, “Peace be with you all.” His first words as Pope were ones of dialogue and building bridges, of unity and of dignity for all.
Pope Leo XIV has a long pastoral experience in Latin and North America. We offer our warmest wishes for his service to the Gospel, from Rome to the whole world, led by a Church that – as he said tonight from St. Peter – “always look for charity” and is “close to those who suffer”.
We ask the Lord to accompany him on the path of his pontificate.
